The History of Asphalt Shingle Recycling and the Industry's New Opportunities
Dan Horton, Founder & Partner, ASR Systems, LLC | Shingle Recycling Forum Co-Chair
Understanding the current market for recycled shingles is imperative to your business. Dan will give an overview of the market both locally and nationally. He will touch on performance based hot mix asphalt designs and how this can reduce risk of use of Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS) in roads. He will discuss CDRA's work with the National Asphalt Paving Association to publish an industry wide Life Cycle Analysis to determine how use of RAS may reduce the carbon footprint of hot mix asphalt. Dan will give an overview of current and emerging end markets for recovered shingle materials and expanding use beyond hot mix.
In 2009, Dan left his senior management position at IKO Industries, an international roofing manufacturer based in Toronto, ON, to establish Asphalt Shingle Recycling (ASR) Systems. His vision was to be a part of a roofing industry circular solution.
He developed a more efficient, mechanical recycling method, which separates asphalt roofing shingles, made of six raw materials, into two streams of re-usable materials, with less than 7% waste. The work is recognized by the US Patent and Trade Office awarding Dan with three utility patents, a fourth patent on equipment design and a fifth patent on centrifuge extraction.
He is a recognized leader and member of the Construction and Demolition Recycling Association, a speaker at recycling events and conferences, and a regular guest lecturer at Virginia Tech. He continues to partner with recyclers and manufacturers to drive transformation in the industry across North America.
