PFAS Regulatory State of the Union: What the Recycling Industry Needs to Know
Andrew Patterson, VP of Innovation and Technology, Eurofins Environment Testing (USA)
2023 issued in a new National Defense Authorization Act, an updated Unified Agenda, a new Mil Spec for fire-fighting foams, and a litany of proposed regulations from TSCA reporting requirements to additional hazard designations for PFAS. As we begin 2025, we see that EPA has achieved several of the milestones they had set for themselves while others have slipped and a few laws seem to have flow in under the radar. Meanwhile, the states have continued to forge their own paths forward with how to address PFAS contamination. And with rapidly evolving science and technologies there is an immeasurable number of developments to keep track of. This presentation will catalogue notable regulatory actions and provide an update on the state of the scientific research that is driving these regulations and how they relate to the recycling industry.
Andrew is currently the VP of Innovation and Development for Eurofins Specialty Services. He brings 20 years of experience in the environmental laboratory industry with a focus on HRGS/HRMS analyses and also LC-MS/MS analysis of PFAS. He currently leads our efforts in Microplastics testing, PFAS in Blood, and 6PPD-Quinone.
Prior to Eurofins, Andrew was the Technical Director for Vista Analytical Laboratory in Northern California where he developed all aspects of PFAS capability within the lab. Before time at Vista, Andrew worked in both the HRMS and LCMS laboratories at Alta Analytical with a focus on developing fringe EPA methods such as 1614, 1699, and 1694. Andrew holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Microbiology/Biochemistry from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
