The Changing World of Recycling
Amy Boyson, Community Affairs Manager, Waste Management
Recyclables do not create an environmental or economic benefit until they are sold as commodities and manufactured into new products. One in four items placed in a recycling cart are not recyclable, and recycling facilities see an average contamination rate of 25% plus. In addition, China is enforcing a 0.5% contamination rate and complete ban of mixed paper and mixed plastics, and all recyclables by 2020. We need to rethink recycling.
